The Heart of Prayer

WEEK 20

Listening in Silence

“We have two ears and one mouth so that we can listen more than we speak.” — Epictetus

Epictetus taught that wisdom begins with listening. Many problems arise because people are eager to speak before they understand. Careful listening develops patience, humility, and discernment. It allows us to learn from others and respond more thoughtfully.

“Be still, and know that I am God.” — Psalm 46:10

Prayer is not only speaking but also listening. In a world filled with constant noise and distraction, stillness becomes a spiritual discipline. When we quiet our hearts, we create space to recognize God's presence and guidance. Silence reminds us that faith is built not only through activity but also through attentive waiting.

Whether in prayer or daily life, listening is a source of wisdom. Silence often reveals what noise conceals.
