The Heart of Prayer

WEEK 20

Seeking God

“The soul becomes dyed with the colour of its thoughts.” — Marcus Aurelius

What occupies the mind eventually shapes the character. Marcus Aurelius understood that the things we contemplate most deeply influence our actions, attitudes, and values. A mind focused on virtue becomes stronger and more peaceful, while a mind consumed by negativity becomes troubled. Reflection is therefore a powerful tool for shaping the soul.

“Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness.” — Matthew 6:33

Prayer begins by seeking God Himself rather than merely seeking His gifts. Christ teaches that when God becomes our highest priority, everything else finds its proper place. Seeking God requires intention, focus, and the willingness to align our lives with His will. As we draw closer to Him through prayer, our desires are gradually shaped by His wisdom, and we begin to view life from
an eternal perspective.

What we seek shapes who we become. Prayer directs the heart toward God, while disciplined reflection directs the mind toward virtue. Together they help form a life grounded in purpose and wisdom.
